OUR STORY
Honoring Onaiya
On Dec 10, 2021, our world changed forever. That day, we picked up our 10-year-old daughter, Onaiya Mei Lee, from school after being told she was in the nurse’s office for throwing up. At first, we thought it was food poisoning, but something felt off. Even water made her sick, and our concern grew. We rushed her to a Hospital in Vacaville, CA, where we learned her pancreas was inflamed. We found that she had a condition called pancreatitis, which is incredibly rare in children.
Onaiya’s condition was severe, and she was transferred to UC Davis Medical Center, Sacramento for specialized care. Over one month, she endured unimaginable pain and fought bravely through numerous treatments, including intubation, dialysis, insulin drips, a feeding tube, wound vac surgery, and procedures to relieve the swelling in her body. Despite every effort by the medical team and her incredible resilience, Onaiya’s Journey ended on January 12, 2022.
Losing Onaiya was devastating, but her spirit, creativity, and drive continue to inspire us every day. From the moment she was born, she was immersed in the beauty industry, spending her days in the salon with her Mother and Aunties. As she grew, her natural curiosity and passion for hairstyling blossomed. One day, she proudly coined the phrase, “Im a H.I.T.". When we asked her what it meant, she explained, “A Hairstylist In Training.” Her cleverness, confidence, and love for the craft left us in awe.
In honor of Onaiya’s dream and dedication, we founded H.I.T. Beauty Collective to carry on her legacy. This nonprofit is a tribute to her memory and her vision of empowering young, underserved entrepreneurs in the beauty industry. Our mission is to guide aspiring hairstylists, equipping them with the skills, resources, and confidence they need to succeed with client interaction and development within the beauty industry.
Onaiya had a spark that lit up every room she entered, and through H.I.T Beauty Collective, we are ensuring that her light continues to shine. This is her legacy, and we are honored to carry it forward.
